Shillong: Heavy rain hammered New Delhi on Tuesday, burying city roads under water and choking traffic for the second straight day. Commuters crawled through gridlock as flooding hit Kushak Road, Rajokri village, ITO, Copernicus Marg, Connaught Place, and Rajaji Marg. Significant water accumulation also plagued areas surrounding the Supreme Court, Ashoka Road, AIIMS, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. A flyover loop near AIIMS turned into a parking lot, trapping vehicles in long, slow-moving queues.
Air travel suffered alongside road traffic. Flightradar24 reported 18 flight cancellations and 146 delays at Indira Gandhi International Airport. This follows Monday’s chaos, which saw 26 flights scrubbed, 15 diverted, and over 390 delayed. Monday also saw parts of Noida and Gurugram ground to a halt.
Rainfall totals have surged past seasonal norms. Safdarjung hit 246.2 mm, while the Ridge observatory recorded 243 mm, a 50 per cent jump above normal levels. Ayanagar reported the highest excess at 66 per cent, reaching 266.3 mm. Lodi Road and Palam reported 233.2 mm and 227.2 mm respectively.
The District Disaster Management Authority intervened as the skies remained dark. Officials ordered private firms, government offices, and schools in Gurugram to shift operations. "The decision came amid concerns that further rain could disrupt commuting routes and severely affect traffic movement on Gurugram's major arterial roads," the authority stated.
