Imphal: Manipur Congress added 11 new faces to its roster today. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh claimed this group is only the first wave. More leaders plan to join soon. The recruits come from seven different constituencies.
Ibobi spoke at Congress Bhavan. He pushed for a united front against the BJP. He argued that the current state government failed to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur. "The suffering of the people had remained unresolved despite the country’s capability to deal effectively with external threats," Ibobi said.
The recruits include former police officer Brinda Thounaojam and former BJP candidate M. Anwar Hussain. Activist Thingujam Oxford also made the jump. Other new members include Longjam Suranjoy Singh, Yengkhom Sanjeep Singh, Laishram Shashibhusan, B. Sharatchandra Sharma, Kh. Devendro Singh, Ghambhier Singh, Nasir Khan, and Mohd. Sahod Khan.
Senior leaders like Gaikhangam and MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam attended the ceremony. The party aims to bolster its reach across the state. They want to regain footing after years of political friction. Ibobi reminded the crowd of the party history. He pointed to economic growth under the past leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh. He believes this momentum will bring the change the people want.
