Itanagar: The Central Bureau of Investigation has started a probe into the 2025 death of a 15-year-old Chakma girl. She worked as a domestic help in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley district. She died on December 11, 2025. The Kolkata Zone of the CBI registered FIR number RC0562026S0002 on July 15. Inspector Rahul Shukla leads the investigation on the ground.
The Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Youth Association is pushing for more. On Thursday, the group submitted evidence to the CBI involving Chikond Chand Chakma of the All India Chakma Students Union. He originally took the case to the National Human Rights Commission. Now, he faces accusations of extorting 3 lakh rupees from the accused to settle the case. This claim relies on a video statement from the girl's father.
The APCYA alleges that union leaders cleared Chikond Chand Chakma after an internal review. They refused to report the matter to the NHRC. President Rup Singh Chakma submitted a June 18, 2026, complaint to the CBI to broaden the scope of the inquiry. He claims some leaders use the NHRC as a tool for a cottage industry of extortion.
Rup Singh Chakma stated: "The CBI inquiry will go a long way in addressing the menace of child trafficking within the Chakma community in Arunachal Pradesh. However, it is equally important to investigate allegations of extortion and any attempts to interfere with the investigation and the administration of justice in cases involving violations of child rights, particularly child labour and sexual offences against children." The agency is now looking into the death and the subsequent cover-up claims.
