Itanagar: The Central Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into the death of a 15-year-old Chakma girl. The minor worked as domestic help in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley district. She died on December 11, 2025.
The agency’s Kolkata Zone registered FIR number RC0562026S0002 on July 15. The National Human Rights Commission directed the move. Inspector Rahul Shukla leads the team on the ground.
New allegations complicate the case. The Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Youth Association accuses Chikond Chand Chakma of the All India Chakma Students’ Union of extorting 3 lakh rupees from the accused to settle the case. The association bases this on a video statement from the girl's father. APCYA President Rup Singh Chakma submitted a June 18, 2026, complaint to the CBI regarding the matter.
Rup Singh Chakma pushed for a wider investigation. He stated, "The CBI inquiry will go a long way in addressing the menace of child trafficking within the Chakma community in Arunachal Pradesh. However, it is equally important to investigate allegations of extortion and other attempts to interfere with the investigation and the administration of justice in cases involving violations of child rights, particularly child labour and sexual offences against children."
The association claims AICSU leaders cleared Chikond Chand Chakma after an internal inquiry instead of reporting the extortion. APCYA officials now demand a full accounting of these interference claims.
