Guwahati: A Cachar district court sentenced brothers Hussain Ahmed Laskar and Hassan Ahmed Laskar to life imprisonment this Wednesday. Judge Kiran Lal Baishnav of the Additional Sessions Judge and Fast Track Court handed down the verdict for the murder of 26-year-old Abdul Alim Laskar. The brothers, residents of South Mohanpur Part-I, must also pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each or face six additional months behind bars.

The violence began on October 28, 2022. It started with a verbal argument between the victim and Hassan Ahmed. Shortly after, both brothers arrived at the victim's home. They attacked him with a machete and a wooden stick. The victim tried to escape through a nearby paddy field. The pair chased him down to continue the assault. He was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital but died from his injuries on October 30.

Abdul Khalique Laskar, the victim's elder brother, filed the initial report at Sonai Police Station. Prosecutor Pradip Kumar Patowary built the case that led to the convictions under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code. The court ruled based on the evidence presented throughout the trial. As Judge Kiran Lal Baishnav noted during the proceedings, the court found the accused guilty of the crime as charged.
