Shillong: Pynthorumkhrah MLA A.L. Hek is pushing the Joint Parliamentary Committee to put people first. The senior BJP leader spoke out on Thursday regarding the ongoing review of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. He expects the committee to weigh the needs of institutions that rely on outside cash.
Hek already reached out to the Union Home Minister. He sent a letter demanding the government listen to those affected by these laws. He wants the committee to bring in stakeholders and beneficiaries before setting any new rules. He noted, "I have made the request and appealed to the Home Minister to consider the views, suggestions and concerns of the institutions which are run from foreign contributions."
The move to a committee is a good sign. It brings members from many different political parties together to study the details. Hek insists that politicians have a clear job. "We are here as politicians and leaders to serve the people. If we are not listening to the concerns and problems of the people, then what are we sitting on the chair for?" he said. The MLA remains confident the process will yield a people-friendly outcome.
