Shillong: Jamui police arrested the primary suspect in a minor girl's molestation case Tuesday after a shootout. Nandan Yadav, identified in a viral video by his red gamchha, took a bullet to the leg during a police encounter. He is currently in the hospital. Five suspects are now in custody, including three juveniles. Police also collared Ramashish Chaudhary for spreading the footage online.
The incident occurred Saturday evening in the Madwa Pahar area. A group of men allegedly stopped a minor girl and assaulted her male companion. The crime only surfaced Sunday evening when the video hit social media. Authorities responded by filing FIRs against operators of 120 social media profiles for sharing the content or exposing the victim's identity.
Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor slammed the state government for targeting social media users instead of the primary attackers. He questioned why officials were silent until the video appeared. "It is horrific and terrifying," Kishor said. He noted that the attackers acted as self-appointed moral police, signaling a complete collapse of fear regarding the law. He mocked government slogans, suggesting the reality is that the state provides no protection.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also weighed in from Wayanad. She argued that large government schemes remain meaningless if authorities cannot guarantee basic street safety. She observed that crimes against women are growing increasingly violent. The investigation continues as police hunt for other potential participants and examine how the video was distributed.
