Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly cleared the Majuli University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on July 27. This move transforms the existing Majuli University of Culture into a broader, multidisciplinary entity. It marks a major shift for the state education sector.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu told the Assembly that the new framework lets the school offer degrees in Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, and Technology. The change keeps a focus on state heritage while opening doors to new fields. "The amendment will enable the university to offer programmes across Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Technology, and other disciplines, while continuing to preserve and promote Assam's rich cultural heritage," Pegu said.

Officials linked the reform to the National Education Policy 2020. They want to drive innovation and research. The state government expects the update to grow the university's profile, offering students in the region a deeper, more comprehensive education path than the previous model allowed.
