Guwahati: A District and Sessions Court in Assam’s Sonitpur district issued two major verdicts on Monday, June 15, handing down life imprisonment in a murder case and a four-year prison term in an assault case. Judge Kaushik Hazarika presided over both trials, with prosecution advocate Prayag Kumar Sarma detailing the results of the proceedings.

In the first case, Milon Karmakar received a life sentence and a fine of Rs 20,000 for the murder of his father-in-law, Bishnu Tanti. Prosecution records show that Karmakar killed Tanti on April 16, 2025, by striking him in the head with a brick. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Dhekiajuli Police Station.

In a separate judgment, the court sentenced Jiten Kumar to four years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting his sister-in-law. This incident took place on April 11, 2025, and was investigated by the Rangapara Police Station.

Sarma confirmed that the court convicted Kumar under Section 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which relates to the assault of a woman with criminal force. Regarding the finalization of these legal proceedings, the prosecution stated, "The court pronounced the sentences after examining the evidence and hearing arguments presented during the trial."
