Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh took home two Best Performing State awards for its work under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban housing scheme. Officials accepted the honors on Sunday during World Habitat Day 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs hosted the event.
The state hit a 100 percent completion rate for houses under the original PMAY-U. It also secured the second-highest performance mark for PMAY-U 2.0. Urban Local Bodies Director Hano Takka collected the awards alongside project officials. State leaders credited the win to consistent monitoring and efforts to finish construction on time. They noted that their work "reflected efforts to ensure that sanctioned houses are completed within the stipulated timeframe and eligible beneficiaries receive housing assistance without delay."
Success in Arunachal remains a heavy lift. Difficult terrain and scattered settlements complicate building projects. Teams from the state Urban Affairs Department, the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies, and various district administrations handled the rollout. The PMAY-U 2.0 program aims to assist 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families over five years.
