Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu claims residents in the Siang belt are being led astray by groups opposing the 11,000-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. He labeled the local population as "innocent" and "misguided" by anti-project activists currently stirring public anger.
Khandu insists the state has only started a Pre-Feasibility Report survey. This step aims to check if the massive dam is technically sound. It is not a final green light for construction. The government maintains that standard legal and statutory processes must follow this survey.
The Chief Minister intends to spend the entire month in Siang and Upper Siang districts to address community concerns. He invited the Adi Bane Kebang, the Adi Students Union, and other key leaders to face-to-face talks. These meetings will cover the project's potential social and environmental fallout.
Khandu made his stance clear regarding the future of the region. "Without consultation and public consent, the project will not go further and will be stopped if not feasible for the future of the people of the Siang belt in general and the state as a whole," he said.
