Guwahati: Shantiban in Amguri’s Ward No. 2 has a new name. It is now Zubeen Nagar. YouTuber Mr Bitu led the construction of homes for 18 families. The Jhanji River floods washed away their original houses. These families spent weeks living under tarpaulin sheets.
Garima Saikia Garg cut the ribbon on Sunday, August 9. She officially opened the new settlement. Mr Bitu started his mission after an e-rickshaw driver named Subhojit helped him move roofing sheets. He found the families in dire straits. Mr Bitu described the scene: “When I reached this place, I saw how people were living here, under tarpaulin sheets. There were pregnant women and other people just lying there.”
He filmed their plight. The video went viral. Donations flooded in from strangers. People sent cash, mattresses, and vital supplies. Bitu raised the funds needed to build the permanent structures.
He rejects the praise. He claims the late singer Zubeen Garg remains his moral compass. Bitu stated, “When he was alive, he used to guide me, and after his death also he is guiding me. I have done nothing. It is Zubeen Garg who is helping me and guiding me on this path.” The rename serves as a final tribute to the singer’s legacy of service.
