Guwahati: Badsha Ali died Monday inside the District Jail in Udalguri, Assam. Prison staff discovered the undertrial prisoner hanging in his cell around 2:30 pm. He lived in Aminpara under the jurisdiction of the Rowta Police Station. Police said he used a gamocha to end his life. Several criminal cases were pending against the man.

Padmanabh Baruah, the Senior Superintendent of Police, confirmed that authorities have started an internal probe. He added, "As per the established procedure, a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the incident." Officials are now working to piece together exactly what happened inside the facility.

The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) labeled the death suspicious. They want an independent investigation into the security failure. Khurshed Alam, the district president for AAMSU, questioned the prison's safety protocols. He stated, "A prison is considered a correctional facility and one of the most secure places for a person in judicial custody. The authorities must clarify how such an incident happened within the jail premises."

The victim's family is skeptical of the official story. They claim his brother visited him just one hour before he died. Relatives now plan to take the case to the Assam Human Rights Commission to force a high-level review of the custodial death.
