Shillong: Technical education in Meghalaya is poised for significant growth following the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approval for new diploma programmes at Williamnagar Polytechnic. Located in Samgonggre within the East Garo Hills, the government institution has been granted permission to offer courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering starting from the 2026-27 academic session.

The AICTE approval, issued on April 9, 2026, authorizes an intake capacity of 30 students for each discipline. Furthermore, the institute is permitted to exceed this capacity by 10 per cent to accommodate students from Economically Weaker Sections in alignment with state government policies. The institution will operate under the Eastern region framework and maintain affiliation with the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education in Shillong.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma welcomed the development, noting that it represents a vital effort to bolster technical expertise within the state. He emphasized that these new courses will provide local youth with enhanced career prospects and skills training, thereby reducing the necessity for students to relocate outside the Garo Hills region to pursue diploma-level studies. The current approval remains valid for two years, during which time the college must finalize its affiliation and admission procedures.
