Shillong: West Bengal Police arrested a Bangladeshi national for his role in a cross-border kidney smuggling racket. The Special Task Force nabbed Russel Ahmed in the Baguihati area late Saturday night. The arrest occurred on the border of Saturday and Sunday. Ahmed now sits in the Bidhannagar South Police Station.
Police took him into custody after interrogating an earlier suspect, Prabhas Mondal. Mondal fell to police on August 18 after a victim's father filed a complaint. That victim received a pittance for his organ. The investigation revealed Ahmed ran the show. "After arresting him from the Baguihati area in the northern outskirts of Kolkata on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the STF sleuths have handed him over to the cops of Bidhannagar (South) Police Station under the Bidhannagar City Police in North 24 Parganas district," a state police officer said.
Ahmed is a repeat offender. Delhi Police caught him earlier in 2024 for the same crimes. He snuck into India and faked his identity with an Aadhaar card and a PAN card. He lived in West Bengal on rent while trafficking victims. The ring targeted poor youth with fake job offers in other states. Once in custody, they removed the victims' kidneys for a low price. Police seized a rate chart and hospital documents from Ahmed, which detailed specific organ requirements across several states. Ahmed will appear in a North 24 Parganas court today as detectives hunt his local partners.
