Imphal: Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar Singh wants change at home. He told residents today that managing solid waste and single-use plastics is the best way to curb local pollution. The politician spoke at a tree planting event in Hatta Golapati.
The Association of Manipuri Students Association Pune Alumni hosted the drive. It partnered with the Golapati Hatta Youth Volunteers Organization, the Golapati Educational Social and Cultural Development Organization, and the Central Forest Division. Around 200 volunteers showed up. They planted 600 saplings along the Imphal River between Minuthong and Kangla Nongpok Thong near Torban.
Arunkumar warned that climate change is already hitting the region. He noted irregular rainfall and rising temperatures. "Environmental conservation must begin at the household level," he said. He insisted that citizens take personal responsibility for the saplings they put in the ground.
The Forest Department added a high-tech touch to the initiative. Workers tagged every tree with a QR code. Each tag links to the specific planter, allowing for better tracking and care of the new greenery.
