Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma joined the centenary celebration of Tura Natya Samity this Saturday to honor the institution's 100 years of service to the arts. Founded in 1926, the organization serves as one of the oldest cultural pillars in the Garo Hills. The event at Lower Babupara featured a commemorative plaque unveiling and marked the start of year-long festivities.
During his address, the Chief Minister praised the Samity as a guardian of regional heritage that has endured since the era of British India. He noted that the institution has acted as a vital platform for theatre, music, and literary growth, helping shape the cultural identity of the region. To support its continued success, Sangma announced a grant of 25 lakh rupees to help improve the facility's infrastructure.
The Chief Minister linked the preservation of local traditions to broader state development goals. He pointed to the growing success of Meghalaya's music scene and international recognition of its artists as proof that heritage can drive economic opportunity. The government is currently working to expand this creative ecosystem through new projects, including the construction of a Music Institute in Tura and a Film Institute in Shillong.
