Kohima: The Department of Economics and Statistics hosted training programs in Longkhim and Tuensang this October to sharpen birth and death registration compliance. Officials met on October 6 at the DUDA Hall in Longkhim and moved to the ENPO Conference Hall in Tuensang on October 7. The sessions targeted Registrars of Births and Deaths, Village Council Chairmen, and Anganwadi workers.
S. Chingmei, EAC Longkhim, kicked off the first session by calling for better grassroots education. She noted, "The programme provided an opportunity to clarify doubts and learn procedures for effective implementation." The initiative aims to clear up manual filing errors as the state transitions to the Online Civil Registration System.
Additional Director Charles N. Kikon led the instruction. He stressed that birth, death, and stillbirth registration is a legal mandate. Kikon covered complex scenarios including surrogacy, IVF, adoptions, and casualties from natural disasters. He told attendees that registration remains the foundation for legal identity and accessing government benefits.
Technical training followed the policy briefings. ESO Nchimbamneu Newmai demonstrated how to complete official reporting forms while FI Pursenla covered registration protocols for varied situations. P. Shokum, the Tuensang District Economics and Statistics Officer and District Registrar, chaired both sessions. Local participants included VCCs, VDBs, and registration staff tasked with verifying records within their specific village jurisdictions.
