Imphal: TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh lashed out on October 17 at the heavy police and paramilitary presence used to monitor anti-Special Intensive Revision protests in Delhi. He argued these resources were sorely lacking in Manipur. The state has suffered through brutal ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023. This conflict has already killed at least 306 people and left many others missing. Clashes between Kuki and Naga groups have also killed 50 people since February.
Ghosh rejected claims from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh that opposition parties want to spark anarchy. Singh recently accused political opponents of trying to trigger regime change like in Bangladesh. Ghosh pushed back hard against this narrative. "We do not support anarchy. But when the new generation raises questions on an issue, it is your responsibility to convince them," Ghosh said.
The protests stem from accusations that the Election Commission arbitrarily deleted names from electoral rolls. The Cockroach Janta Party had planned a march in central Delhi on Friday. Police detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and student leader Neha Bora before the event could start. Other protesters still gathered at Connaught Place under a massive security blanket. The BJP continues to label these demonstrations as a political stunt to stir up trouble.
