Shillong: Meghalaya’s State Secretariat turned into a ghost town this Monday. The government ordered schools to close for a football holiday, but state officials clocked out too. Top ministers skipped town for New Delhi, leaving empty desks behind.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered the holiday to honor the FIFA Club World Cup final. He spent the day in the national capital. He attended the swearing-in ceremony of his brother, James Sangma, the newly elected Rajya Sabha MP. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong joined them in the capital.
The rot started at the top. Staff attendance plummeted across all departments. Corridors remained quiet. While a few offices stayed open, the administrative hub moved at a snail's pace. Rural citizens arrived at the complex expecting full service. They found nobody to help them. One observer noted the irony, stating: "The irony was not lost on observers."
