Gangtok: Jorethang police arrested a man for the murder of his 44-year-old wife. She died on June 22 in the Sumbuk area. The husband claimed she suffered fatal burns after accidentally spilling hot water on herself the previous night.
Medical examiners in Gangtok shredded that story. A Medico-Legal Consultant found the fresh burns were not accidental, suicidal, or self-inflicted. The victim suffered extensive injuries across her neck, abdomen, legs, and back.
Investigators found partially burnt clothing outside the couple's home. These clothes were seized as evidence. During questioning, the man's story fell apart. Officers noted the husband's statements were contradictory, leading to his formal arrest and police custody.
The doctor opined that the "nature and distribution of the injuries were inconsistent with an accidental incident." Forensic experts continue to process the scene. Police are working to pin down the exact circumstances of the killing.
