Shillong Book Fair returns with 80 stalls at Central Library

Shillong: The third Shillong Book Fair starts Friday at the State Central Library. It runs from September 25 to October 1. Doors open daily from 11 am to 7 pm. Entry costs nothing, and all books carry a 10 per cent discount. The National Book Trust and local government departments organized the seven-day event to bring literature closer to the public.

Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai will open the fair. More than 80 stalls await visitors. Publishers will feature fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and regional titles. Organisers say the event aims to "widen access to titles in different Indian languages and genres."

The inventory includes works in English, Khasi, and Garo. Sonalika Publications will sell early-learning books for children. The JK Yog stall brings works by Swami Mukundananda on happiness and mind management. Local writers like poet and playwright Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih will be represented. His catalog includes Funeral Nights and Around the Hearth: Khasi Legends.

The event hosts various literary programs. Last year saw about 100 stalls and featured storytelling, career counselling, and cultural shows. This fair builds on the 2023 revival, which marked the first such event in seven years. It connects Shillong’s readers with authors and publishers from across the country.
