Severe Flooding and Orange Alerts Grip Tripura as Monsoon Rains Intensify

Agartala: Torrential monsoon rains have battered Tripura, forcing evacuations and triggering severe waterlogging. An orange alert remains in effect as the India Meteorological Department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall through July 16. In Dhalai district, 17 families fled their homes at Dhanya Ram Karbari Para after floodwaters inundated the area. Residents took shelter in a local school rest house. Locals alleged no government official arrived to help, noting that many were unable to save their belongings before the water surged. One displaced resident said, "Locals said several families were unable to bring their belongings as water entered their houses."

Rainfall totals have been extreme. Between July 12 and July 13 alone, Agartala recorded 138 mm of rain. Bishramganj followed with 116 mm. Earlier, Chawmanu hit 139.2 mm in a single day. Water levels have forced the closure of the Katakhal Embankment and the Pragati Road stretch in West Tripura. Severe waterlogging has paralyzed traffic and disrupted daily life across the state.

Multiple weather systems are driving the deluge. A trough stretches from Bihar to Manipur, while cyclonic circulations persist over the Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh. These systems continue to pull moisture into the state.

Beyond the weather, other state developments continue. A Tripura man recently returned home after spending 16 months in a Bangladesh jail. Bangladesh also gifted 1,100kg of mangoes to the state as a goodwill gesture. Local agricultural efforts persist, with the government moving to buy 20,710 MT of paddy from local farmers. The tea sector is looking for Rs 726 crore in investments at an upcoming summit. Meanwhile, West Tripura police are pushing to speed up case disposal, and the state has launched an online system to track school learning outcomes. Public health officials are managing reports of diarrhoea in a local village, while vaccination efforts have reached 10,242 children in West Tripura. Officials also expect a 72-hour strike called by disbanded militant groups to be called off.
