Search Crew Recovers Body From Deep Coal Mine in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong: State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel recovered the body of a 41-year-old man from an abandoned coal mine in East Jaintia Hills on June 1. The victim fell into the 120-foot-deep shaft near the Khliehriat DC Office area on May 26 while trying to collect drinking water.

District authorities deployed the 1st Battalion SDRF from Shillong on May 27 to initiate recovery efforts. The mission proved difficult due to 40 feet of water flooding the mine. Local residents and family members supported the team by providing pumping equipment to drain the water and clear a path for the searchers.

The operation concluded on the evening of June 1 after six days of intensive work. Four SDRF members and two local volunteers entered the mine at 6:30 pm and successfully located the victim by 9 pm. The body was subsequently turned over to local police for standard legal procedures.
