Shillong: Russian missiles and drones slammed into Kyiv and the surrounding region Wednesday, leaving 17 dead. Dozens more sustained injuries during the two-hour assault. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the mounting toll as the nation’s depleted air defenses failed to intercept a single incoming weapon.
These strikes follow a grim pattern. Moscow continues to target Ukraine with routine, large-scale barrages throughout the summer months. Kremlin forces are currently exploiting a severe lack of interceptors for the US-made Patriot systems. The Patriot remains the only weapon in the Ukrainian arsenal capable of stopping ballistic missiles.
As the air war intensifies, Kyiv faces a difficult reality. Zelenskyy noted the situation plainly, saying, "Moscow is exploiting Ukraine’s critical shortage of interceptors for the US-made Patriot systems, the sole air defence weapon in its arsenal able to shoot down ballistic missiles."
