Shillong: Fifty fish farmers gathered in Nongpoh on Thursday for a capacity building program focused on modern aquaculture. The office of the Superintendent of Fisheries hosted the event to sharpen local skills. ICAR-CIFA from Bhubaneswar partnered with the Meghalaya Department of Fisheries to lead the initiative.
Dr. Subhendu Adhikari, a principal scientist at ICAR-CIFA, ran technical sessions on advanced farming methods. Experts pushed scientific techniques to drive better freshwater production and keep local aquaculture sustainable. Productivity must rise. Organizers handed out improved Amur carp seeds to all attendees to jumpstart their efforts.
These farmers also received solar-powered aerators from the Ri-Bhoi district administration under a state scheme. This outreach effort falls under the North Eastern Hill Programme. ICAR-CIFA Director Dr. PK Sahoo and Meghalaya Fisheries Director Dr. R. Ch. Marak backed the session to strengthen the regional sector. Dr. Adhikari noted, "The training was organised by the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Meghalaya."
