Police Stalled on Thangsko Mine Blast Investigation

Shillong: Six months have passed since the Mynsngat-Thangsko coal mine blast in East Jaintia Hills. The Justice B.P. Katakey Committee issued its 40th interim report demanding police finish the investigation. Officials still lack critical post-mortem reports for the 34 people who died.

Authorities managed to grab 15 reports from the West Jaintia Hills DMHO back in May. One more report from Ri-Bhoi remains missing. The committee told police to stop dragging their feet. They want the remaining paperwork finished and a final charge-sheet filed with the court.

Police have filed three separate documents in court already. A first charge-sheet dropped on February 18. Supplemental filings followed on February 24 and May 6. The last one relied on the BDDS post-blast report and the necessary prosecution sanction.

Enforcement efforts in the region are active. Officers logged 90 FIRs for illegal mining and 22 for illegal transport. They also filed four theft reports for seized coal and two for explosives. Officials seized 18,962.966 MT of coal, 57 vehicles, 5.5 kg of gelatin, and 74 detonators. The Committee noted, "The 40th Interim Report of the Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey Committee has asked the Police Department to expedite remaining post-mortem reports." Patrols, NGT check-points, and 92 drone surveys continue across the district.
