Shillong: NPP leader James P.K. Sangma is moving toward an uncontested win for Meghalaya’s single Rajya Sabha seat. His nomination papers were declared valid on Tuesday following a review by the Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary, Malthus S. Sangma, at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
The process moved forward without any challenges, clearing a significant hurdle for the candidate. James filed his paperwork on Monday alongside Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, various cabinet ministers, and other supporters. Because no other candidates entered the race, the seat is effectively his once the final administrative steps conclude.
Official confirmation depends on the withdrawal deadline passing on June 11. Once that date clears, James will be formally declared the winner, rendering the previously scheduled June 18 election unnecessary. Reflecting on the state's political climate, the Returning Officer confirmed the outcome by stating, "Sangma’s nomination without objections" was accepted after a thorough review of the documents.
