Guwahati: Nexus Select Trust is pouring 1,600 crore into Guwahati. This move marks the firm's first retail REIT expansion into Northeast India. The project aims to bolster the city's standing as a premier regional business hub.
Construction plans include a 5.16-lakh-square-foot Grade A shopping mall. A 164-key Hyatt Regency will sit alongside the retail space. This integrated destination blends shopping, hospitality, business, and leisure into one site.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pushed for the development. The state expects the asset to drive urban economic growth. Officials stated the project is a "major development for the city" that will generate new avenues for business activity. The site aims to solidify Guwahati's role as the primary urban center for the Northeast.

Beyond the retail push, the state is banking on a massive energy play. Adani Power officially broke ground on September 20 for a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Chapar, Dhubri district. The 48,000 crore facility, which spans 585 hectares, will house four 800 MW units and aims to slash Assam's dependence on outside power. Construction will create 20,000 jobs, with another 5,000 permanent roles slated for when the turbines start spinning. The Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited is already carving out a 400 kV transmission line to link the site to Rangia.
Jeet Adani, director at Adani Defence and Aerospace, touted the plant as the largest power asset in the Northeast. Beyond the power project, the group is aggressively expanding its footprint in the state. Adani confirmed plans for two cement plants and a maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility, building on the development of an Aero City near the expanded Guwahati terminal. The Adani Foundation is also tying these industrial moves to community work in Kamrup, targeting healthcare, education, and skill training for locals.

Beyond the industrial push, Assam is moving into the space sector. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the foundation stone for an ISRO Advanced Radar Research Centre will be laid at Chandrapur. This facility operates under Project NETRA, designed to track orbital debris and protect national space assets. The project covers 67 acres, with land transfer finalized late last year.
Sarma is also fast-tracking social and urban infrastructure. He recently reviewed the ongoing construction at AIIMS Guwahati and finalized plans for a 20,000-seat international cricket stadium. Additionally, crews are set to break ground on a multi-level parking facility in Amingaon to clear up congestion in the rapidly growing district.
