Guwahati: Nagaon University joined the global stage at the 17th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant, held at the IIT Hyderabad Convention Centre from October 4 to 9. The event marked the first time India hosted this international gathering. Experts focused on the theme, "Reaching Ten Years of Enforcement of the Minamata Convention: Achievements, Challenges and Road Map for the Future."
Academic Registrar Farishta Yasmin served on the Scientific Steering Committee. She also sat on a panel discussing the role of women in science. Yasmin, along with Prantik Sharma Baruah and research scholar Bhargov Mudhukailya, delivered one poster and two oral presentations. These works examined mercury levels found in soil and agricultural crops.
The university's footprint extended to the arts. Students performed traditional dances to highlight the cultural diversity of Northeast India. Jagannath Biswakarma, a former student at the institution, chaired the entire conference and championed the link between Nagaon University and international research circles. University officials stated that this effort aimed to connect local research from Assam with wider scientific networks.
