Kohima: President Droupadi Murmu presented the 2026 National Teachers' Award to history teacher Rokosekho Ronald Meru at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The 53-year-old educator arrived in Dimapur on Sunday to a warm homecoming. He brings home a lifetime of work. Meru currently teaches at the Government Higher Secondary School in Sechü-Zubza, Kohima district, marking over 24 years in the profession.
Reflecting on the achievement, Meru called the recognition an "exciting, honourable and blessed moment." He credited the Government of India and the Ministry of Education for the honor. His path to this award started with a District Teachers' Award in 2018 followed by a State Teachers' Award in 2023.
Meru spent a decade of his career in Pungro near the Myanmar border. He moved his wife and children to the remote Kiphire district to ensure his duties were met. He refused to call the posting a setback. His work focuses on student life beyond the classroom walls. He visits homes to engage with parents, tackles high dropout rates, and bolsters school administration.
He utilizes ICT-enabled tools and hands-on learning to reach his students. He incorporates quizzes, debates, educational tours, and sports into the curriculum. This strategy pushed former students toward careers in nursing, teaching, and the Territorial Army. He urges new teachers to see their role as a commitment to a student's total growth, not just the completion of a textbook.
