Meghalaya Truckers Demand Extension for One-Time Settlement Deadline

Shillong: The All-Meghalaya Truck Owner and Driver Welfare Association wants more time. They officially asked the state to push the one-time settlement deadline to December 2026. Heavy rains are hurting business. Truckers cannot pay up right now.

Association president Wanshwa Nongtdu met with Transport Commissioner and Secretary Sanjay Goyal on Friday. He handed over a formal memorandum to push for the delay. The group needs time to renew insurance and finish vehicle paperwork. Nongtdu explained the situation to the press. "We have requested the government to extend the deadline till December because many truck owners are struggling to earn during the rainy season," he said.

The monsoon season wiped out income for many operators. Currently, 5,000 trucks run across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Roughly 45 transporters serve local cement plants. These specific operators face the worst of the current downturn. Secretary W. Warlarpih noted that the government issued the notification during the peak of the wet season. This timing made compliance nearly impossible for the average owner.

The association wants the extension to let business normalize. This would provide the necessary window to generate cash and meet financial duties. The group also delivered copies of their request to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
