Meghalaya Officials Issue Food Safety Warning During Monsoon Season

Shillong: Meghalaya's Food Safety Commissionerate is warning residents to stop eating wild forest greens. Monsoon rains trigger dangerous changes in wild plants. Eating them poses severe health risks. Some people even lose their lives after consuming toxic forest produce. Officials state that these plants lack rigorous safety testing and cannot be verified as safe for human consumption.

The department encourages the public to stick to cultivated produce instead of foraging in the woods. The warning extends to the protection of water sources. Pesticides and insecticides used in farming are frequently dumped into wells, streams, and rivers. This poisons local drinking water supplies. The agency mandates that farmers stop discarding these harmful chemicals near water channels.

Officials emphasize that rapid action is required if symptoms appear. "If you consume poisonous greens or water contaminated with chemicals, rush to the nearest health centre for treatment," said department representatives. Keep close watch on what you eat and drink until the monsoon passes.
