Meghalaya High Court Demands Answers on Illegal Coal Mining

Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court ordered the state to file a formal status report regarding the 41st Interim Report on illegal coal mining. Judges Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Wanlura Diengdoh issued the directive on Monday.

Justice retired B.P. Katakey submitted the findings on September 20, 2026. The bench described the document as “revealing and exhaustive.” They want the state to grab a copy from the Registry immediately. This report needs to address the ongoing suo motu proceedings.

The court also logged the state’s status updates on the 40th Interim Report and filings related to the August 31, 2026 order. Judges held off on reviewing these new documents during Monday's session. They pushed the full consideration to the next meeting. The court set the next hearing for November 2, 2026.
