Shillong: Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran met Agriculture Minister Timothy D Shira on Friday to demand immediate state intervention for struggling farmers. Kharpran submitted a memorandum calling for a state-backed agricultural price protection policy. He also wants the government to grant an extra Rs 4,000 annually to every farmer, topping off the existing Rs 6,000 provided by the Centre under the PM-KISAN scheme.
Farmers are bleeding money. Market prices for cabbage and other seasonal crops have plummeted. Growers often cannot cover the basic costs of harvesting and transportation. Kharpran noted that many cultivators are drowning in bank loans and suggested that the state consider debt waivers to alleviate the pressure.
Minister Shira promised to bring these concerns to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The proposal suggests creating a price stabilisation fund, a minimum support price, and more cold storage units. Kharpran pointed out that poor infrastructure and lack of procurement cause the recurring price crashes.
The legislator emphasized the need for better market intelligence, stronger cooperatives, and increased food processing industries. He noted the current situation is "extremely alarming." During his talk with reporters, he added: "Our farmers do not seek charity; they seek fairness." Kharpran maintains that these measures are vital to keep the next generation interested in farming.
