Imphal: Manipur authorities removed the principal of Eklavya Model Residential School at Zeikhuluang Loktak Project on August 3. The move followed reports of acute food shortages that left students hungry and forced some into hospitals. Viral social media videos showed students receiving medical care after complaining of severe weakness. Some pupils broke down in tears due to the lack of proper meals.
The school operates under the Eklavya Model Residential School scheme, which provides free housing and education to tribal students. Families and concerned groups demanded a full inquiry into the living conditions. They insist officials must fix accountability for the lapses. The Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution, managed by the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department, issued the removal order immediately.
The principal is now attached to the office of the Member Secretary, MSTEI, until further notice. This new order supersedes all prior directives. Critics say the school failed its mission. One demand urged, "The Tribal Affairs and Hills Department, school authorities and other concerned agencies to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations and ensure that students have access to adequate food, healthcare, accommodation and other basic necessities." Authorities must now prioritize the health and dignity of the students to prevent these conditions from returning.
