Imphal: A 60-year-old man from Manipur, identified as Tomba, died on Thursday after ingesting Indorma Phosphide. He was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday afternoon but died during treatment. Authorities had arrested the Imphal East resident on September 29 for a cybercrime investigation.
The Cyber Crime Police Station opened the case after Sagolsem Sushil Singh reported an obscene comment posted on September 26 at 8:15 pm. The Facebook post from an account named P Premananda targeted his sister. Police charged Tomba under Sections 79 and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. He was released after his arrest and received a notice under Section 175 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
An officer at the Cyber Crime Police Station defended the handling of the case. "The accused fully cooperated with the investigation and provided his statement. Technical investigation has been conducted and the device seized from him was examined. The charge sheet is nearing completion," the officer stated.
Tomba's wife filed a separate complaint after his death. She alleges that local Meira Paibis from the Naoriya Pangthanglakpa Assembly constituency and other unidentified people subjected her husband to a social media trial. She claims these individuals spread wild allegations across Facebook and WhatsApp, leading to mental distress. Her formal complaint alleges criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and abetment of suicide. Police have not verified these claims. Officials now urge the public to avoid sharing derogatory material online.
