Agartala: Locals in Jatanbari paraded an elderly man through the streets after smearing his face with black ink and hanging a garland of slippers around his neck. The Natunbazar police station officers intervened to rescue the man from a mob that stormed his home. The incident follows the suicide of the man's son, Pradip Das, who was found hanging in his residence four days ago.

Villagers claim the suicide occurred after Das learned his father had been sexually assaulting his wife for a long time. The woman, who is four months pregnant, allegedly endured years of physical and mental harassment from her in-laws. Neighbors discovered the abuse after a local woman witnessed the father-in-law and the survivor in a compromising situation.

Angry residents attacked the accused once the news of the son's death triggered outrage. Police transported the injured man to a local hospital for treatment after extracting him from the crowd. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nirman Das confirmed that no formal charges exist. "As no complaint has been lodged at the police station, no case has been registered so far and nobody has been detained," the officer said.
