Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) demanded the Meghalaya government scrap a quota for non-local candidates on Monday. They want an immediate review of the selection process for the CM LEAD Fellowship. The current rules reserve four of the 12 available fellowship spots for people from outside the state.
The HYC submitted a formal representation to the Chief Minister via the Officer on Special Duty for SSA-SEMAM. They support the fellowship goal of fixing public education. Still, they insist the government prioritize indigenous youth for these taxpayer-funded roles.
The group argues that one-third of spots going to outsiders deprives local talent of work. Local youth need these jobs. Fellows must coordinate with district administrations, Samagra Shiksha, DERT, schools, teachers, and communities. The organization stated, "Such responsibilities demand a thorough understanding of Meghalaya’s geography, governance, tribal customs, local languages."
