Guwahati: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) wants the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to step in. It wants an immediate end to rising tensions along the Meghalaya-Assam border. On Monday, HITO leaders submitted a formal request to Home Secretary Govind Mohan.
Road blockades are choking the National Highway. These actions disrupt essential services and daily travel. HITO alleges that the situation has spiraled past simple law and order concerns. It now demands a time-bound, impartial probe into recent border interference.
Tensions hit a flashpoint when personnel from the Indian Army were stopped on the highway. The soldiers were riding in a civilian vehicle. HITO claims that even after the troops identified themselves, local agitators ignored them. The group says the soldiers were subjected to "misbehaviour and confrontation while being made to remain on the road."
Evidence exists. HITO turned over video footage of the incident to federal officials. They want the MHA to review the tapes and take legal action. The organization previously flagged similar threats in December 2024 involving the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad. That dispute cooled after a plea to the Assam Chief Secretary.
HITO wants a permanent coordination mechanism between the MHA and the two state governments. This team would handle fast information sharing during flare-ups. The group insists it seeks no escalation. They argue that disputes must stay within the bounds of constitutional law. They want the highway clear for everyone. They fear that unchecked blockades will only trigger a cycle of retaliation.
