Shillong: Hajong community leaders want a fix. The Hajong Students’ Union and the Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association hit the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary with formal demands this Thursday. They want the government to clean up its online recruitment portal immediately. The site currently lacks a specific category for Hajong applicants.
Instead, the portal lumps them into a category for newly recognized tribes. This label ignores the group's history. The Hajong are a recognized Scheduled Tribe under the Constitution Order of 1950. They have held this status since the state gained its own borders in 1972. The Hajong Students and Youth Voice Federation Council joined the fight to demand a fair application process.
The groups blasted the current system. "Therefore, categorising Hajongs under ‘newly recognised tribes of Meghalaya’ is historically inaccurate, constitutionally misleading and creates unnecessary confusion among eligible candidates applying for government employment," the organizations stated. They reminded the department that Hajong leaders fought for statehood. These people deserve better recognition than a flawed, bureaucratic dropdown menu.
