Shillong: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) is pushing the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to codify Garo Customary Law. Current traditions regarding marriage, property inheritance, and village administration lack official documentation. The committee submitted a formal request to the GHADC Chief Executive Member to finalize these regulations immediately.
The group also wants the council to adopt the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act of 2016. Leaders urged the GHADC to review its powers under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to better shield local tribal residents. Progress remains stalled on several fronts. The GSMC highlighted the unfinished guest house project in Shillong, which failed to meet its three-year completion deadline.
Regarding the long-standing demand for a separate electoral roll, GSMC leaders noted, "Dingtang electoral roll-ko jakkalchina dabianiara ru·uta bilsirangonin A·chik jatni dabienggipa ong·ani gimin da·o ong·engon, GHADC-ni Budget Session-o chanchirimenba, dingtang electoral roll-ko ra·gatchina chinga mol·molenga."
The organization listed several additional reforms for the council. They called for the implementation of an Anti-Defection Law, stricter contract registration rules, and a freeze on new hires. Furthermore, the GSMC demanded a review of land patta issuance to non-tribals, tougher licensing for TNT, and an evaluation of Article 243ZC within Sixth Schedule areas.
