Guwahati: A flash flood tore through Assam's Lakhimpur district early Thursday. Overnight rain in the Arunachal Pradesh hills pushed the Singra River over its limits. The water smashed through the right-bank embankment at Phoolbari Basti. It happened fast. The river shifted its path entirely, carving a new channel through the landscape and flooding the Ranganadi Legislative Assembly Constituency.
Floodwaters poured into Bharaluwa Kachari and Doolahat under the Nowboicha Revenue Circle. The surge swallowed agricultural fields, schools, and homes. The main village road went underwater. Families found themselves trapped by the rising currents, losing all connection to the outside world. Residents watched in alarm as the river water cut through their land.
The Singra River has a history of violence. Back in 2020, it breached an embankment near National Highway-15, causing massive destruction and erosion. Local residents expressed concern over the rapid rise in water levels and the extensive damage caused by the sudden change in the river's course. Officials are currently monitoring the situation. They have yet to provide a full assessment of the ruined crops and shattered infrastructure.
