Guwahati: A viral audio recording is exposing an alleged extortion syndicate operating in the Mayong area of Morigaon, Assam. Truckers hauling sand and soil report a forced payment scheme. Operators claim they must cough up between 5,000 and 10,000 rupees every month to keep their vehicles on the road.
The recording purportedly features a man named Sunti Kalita. He dictates when dumpers can move and warns drivers of incoming Forest Department raids. Kalita holds no official government post. Yet, he acts as a gatekeeper for vehicle traffic. Residents say over 200 dumpers move through Mayong every single day. Locals are demanding answers about the money trail.
Claims suggest this operation involves a toll gate in Mayong where Kalita collects cash. The scheme allegedly funnels money directly to state officials. "A portion of the money reaches Forest Department officials," according to the allegations. Vehicles belonging to owners who refuse to pay face the threat of seizure.
Scrutiny is now falling on Nagaon Divisional Forest Officer Subhash Kadam and Ranger Munni Gogoi. Public pressure for a formal investigation is mounting. People want to know if the recording is genuine and who exactly is profiting from the trade. The Forest Department has yet to comment on these charges.
