Expansion work begins at Shillong Airport

Shillong: Crews are finally breaking ground at Shillong Airport in Umroi. The project aims to accommodate larger aircraft, turning a long-held goal into a reality. Airports Authority of India officials confirmed the contractor arrived months ago to set up heavy machinery.

Earth-cutting is underway across the site. Work remains slow for now. "Right now, the firm is doing earth-cutting work wherever possible," officials noted, anticipating a faster pace once the monsoon season ends.

Pressure is mounting from the top. Earlier this week, the High Court of Meghalaya ordered all agencies to clear the path for development following a formal green light from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The state government must clear all obstructions from the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces by September 30, 2026.
