Guwahati: Abdul Rahim died Thursday after a wild elephant attacked him in Assam’s Goalpara district. The victim lived in Maylapathar and entered the Mariyam Nagar area to clear a herd of elephants from local paddy fields. He set off firecrackers to scare the animals. One elephant charged him. Rahim suffered severe injuries and could not survive them.
The herd haunted the area for days. Local residents pointed to a dead elephant found in a field just 500 metres from the attack site earlier this week. Tension gripped the region Wednesday afternoon. Two elephants tumbled into a nearby drainage ditch. The rest of the herd worked to haul their companions out of the hole. Witnesses described the rescue, noting the group showed, "considerable effort."
Thursday’s lethal encounter happened within 700 metres of the previous sites. People living in the area now demand action. They want the Forest Department to step in to stop the violence. Locals urge officials to shield the public and keep the elephants safe.
