East Khasi Hills Police Boost Durga Puja Security Amid Roadblock Protests

Shillong: East Khasi Hills Police are bringing in extra state forces to guard Durga Puja celebrations. SP Vivek Syiem confirmed the plan on October 12, citing round-the-clock mobile patrols at every pandal. Security teams will watch for overcrowding to prevent accidents. "Measures and advisories have also been issued to ensure that there is no stampede," Syiem said.

Authorities and stakeholders held a string of meetings to finalize security details. The police ordered the Central Puja Committee to staff every location with volunteers. Traffic officers will assist these crews, while organizers must install CCTV cameras and maintain strict fire safety protocols.

Tensions remain high on the streets. The Khasi Students’ Union is pushing for the removal of pandals that block traffic in Mawprem, Rynjah, and Nongthymmai. KSU environment secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew labeled the unauthorized structures a public nuisance. The union sent a formal letter to the Public Works Department Chief Engineer on October 11.

Kharbihkhiew argues that organizers must secure proper permits before building on public thoroughfares. While the union respects the festival, they maintain that commuters deserve clear access. The PWD now faces pressure to clear the obstructions and enforce road guidelines immediately.
