Shillong: A teenage girl in East Garo Hills is dead. She died by suicide on Wednesday at 5 pm after being rushed to a local government hospital. The victim was between 15 and 17 years old. Her death followed a battle with depression stemming from an alleged sexual assault that occurred over two weeks ago.
Police have an active investigation open. No suspects are in custody yet. Her parents filed an official FIR regarding the assault more than two weeks ago. Authorities have now registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Investigators are still piecing together the timeline. One police source noted, "All angles into the matter are being looked into." Officials suspect the trauma of the initial incident and the subsequent legal reporting process triggered the depression that led to her death.
