Shillong: Students in an East Garo Hills government LP school have missed classes since January. The Achik State People’s Front (ASPF) flagged the prolonged closure to the District School Education Officer and the District Mission Coordinator for the SSA. Raksim Marak, the ASPF chief organising secretary, claims the lone teacher, Olpen Momin, has skipped work for months. This effectively shuttered the school.
The group drew these claims from villagers and the School Management Committee. They reported that the school failed to hold 2026 half-yearly exams. Worse, the organization alleged that when Momin shows up, he is often drunk. "On occasions when the teacher attends the school, he does so allegedly under the influence of alcohol, does not conduct classes and sleeps or rests in the classroom."
Around 20 to 30 students are losing out on instruction and Mid-Day Meal benefits. The School Management Committee previously told the Block Education Office in Songsak about these issues, but officials ignored the reports. Now, the ASPF wants a surprise inspection within 48 hours. They also demanded an audit of attendance records from January through September.
The organization insists the government must install a substitute teacher and host compensatory classes immediately. They expect an Action Taken Report within seven days. If the government stays silent, the group plans to drag the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights into the fight. They already sent a copy of their formal complaint to the deputy commissioner.
