Guwahati: The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Kamrup (Metro) remanded Trishna Barman to 14 days of judicial custody on Friday. The court denied her bail application after the Assam GST Department brought her to Guwahati from West Bengal on transit remand. Investigators claim the operation cost the state government 25 crore in revenue.
Barman allegedly ran the scheme with her brother, Surajit Barman. The pair set up several bogus firms to issue fake invoices for commission payments. These shell companies generated fraudulent Input Tax Credit claims despite zero movement of goods or services. The investigation now includes Kolkata resident Shubhrajit Bhattacharya as a key suspect in the racket.
Authorities believe this is just the start. Officials stated, "The investigation has gathered momentum with fresh leads emerging during the probe." GST investigators are now tracking financial trails to find the full extent of the interstate syndicate. More arrests may follow.
